October 25, 2020

Late afternoon on Thursday, October 22 Fort Scott High School was notified by the Southeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department that two students in the high school were presumed positive for COVID-19.  The presumed positive students were at school with symptoms.  As a result of the COVID-19 presumed positive students, the high school administration performed close contact tracing and contacted the families of those students who were deemed close contacts.

On Saturday, October 24 the Winfield Scott Administration was notified one of their staff had tested positive for COVID-19.  The Winfield Scott Administration has performed close contact tracing and contacted the families of those students who were deemed close contacts.

USD 234 is encouraging our students to wear masks that fit and wear them correctly.  If the students are consistently wearing their masks correctly, along with practicing good hygiene and physically distancing at school will all help slow the spread of the coronavirus.  KDHE recommends the safest masks are procedural disposable, surgical disposable, N95, KN95, and masks with two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric.  The Centers for Disease Control suggests washable masks should be included with your regular laundry, washed on the warmest appropriate water setting for the cloth used to make the mask, and use the highest heat setting and leave in the dryer until completely dry.

Working with the Bourbon County Health Department, USD 234 is monitoring these situations and will provide stakeholders with updates as we know more. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s building.

Respectfully,

Ted Hessong
