FSMS Covid Update 10/25/21

In order to keep everyone informed of Covid Conditions at FSMS, I would like to provide you with the following information and update on our environment.

As of noon Monday, 10/25/21, FSMS has 8 current positive students who are at home in isolation.

Of the 8 positive students, 7 are from the sixth grade.

Of the 7 positive sixth-graders, 2 were originally high-risk close contacts at school that displayed symptoms during their 10-day quarantine and were tested and found to be positive which could indicate a spread of the virus at school.

Again, High-Risk students are:

  • Students not wearing masks

  • Students who are not vaccinated

  • Students who have not had Covid in the past 6 months

Low-Risk students

  • Students wearing their mask

  • Student is vaccinated

  • The student has had a confirmed case of Covid in the past 6 months

We are still diligently working to maintain superior hygiene at FSMS as well as creating social distancing as we can.

We currently are mask optional as a district and school. Our Gating criteria adopted in Oct. Board meeting provides guidance on whether masks will or will not be mandated. It takes into consideration the number of positive cases at our school as well as the current cases in our county. FSMS’ threshold to consider mandated masks is 9 positive cases and we must consider the number of cases in the community to which that threshold is set at 30 cases. Monday’s report for the county indicates that we have 28 active cases which is an increase of 10 cases from last Monday.

My concern is the concentration of, and a total increase of positive cases in a two-day window last week that has forced us to relay the names of 45 students to the Health Dept. to be added to their list of students in quarantine.

Currently, 9.5% of our entire student population is not attending in person due to Covid quarantine or isolation. Our sixth-grade class has 25% of the class out this week due to Covid quarantine or isolation.

I hope this information helps parents and students evaluate their choice on masks. I would highly recommend the wearing of masks if you have not been vaccinated or have not had Covid. We hope the trend changes, but are prepared to once again ask all to wear masks should the increase continue.

Thank you,

David Brown
