  • Building status will be determined weekly by district and building administration.
  • Communication with building status will be sent directly to parents each Friday and updated on our Covid Attendance Dashboard page.
  • Staff and students will still be required to wear a mask on any form of school transportation. This includes extracurricular activities, field trips, etc., per Federal Order.
  • Individuals/families who choose to continue to wear masks even during a possible mask optional phase are encouraged to do so.

BUILDING STATUS DEFINITIONS
Mask Optional - All of the guidelines have been met on the Gaiting Criteria for a school building.

Mask Required - One or more of the guidelines have NOT been met on the Gaiting Criteria for a school building.

It is important to understand that your child’s mask optional opportunity may change due to absenteeism rates within your child’s building or due to county incidence rates. Students will need to have a mask ready if this determination is made. It is the responsibility of the child and/or parent to have a mask ready, if required. If the determination is made that masks will be required in the building, the building administrator will send out a notification to parents.

MASK WEARING IS STILL REQUIRED ON ALL USD 234 TRANSPORTATION

Students and staff are still required by Federal Order to wear a mask on public transportation, which includes all district transportation. Your child will still be required to wear a mask on a school bus, school van, or any other form of school transportation. This includes extracurricular activities, field trips, etc. Once again, it is the student’s responsibility to have a mask ready to wear if they are going to use school district transportation services.

FAQ

When does this take effect?

The USD 234 Board of Education approved the Mask Gaiting Criteria on Monday, 10/11/21. It will take effect on Monday, October 18, 2021.

What changes for my student?

If your student is in a building that meets the mask optional gaiting criteria, they are given the choice to wear a mask in that building. If your child rides USD 234 transportation to and from school or for an activity, they are still required to wear a mask while on the bus.

Who created the Criteria?

These criteria have been reviewed by the Southeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department.

I have children in different buildings, will each child have a different mask status?
Mask status is per building.  There is a potential that one building could be mask optional while another building is mask required.

Why does my student need to bring a mask if their building is on mask optional status?

While our intention is that a building status will be determined each week, if a change needs to be made immediately due to a change in data we ask that students have a mask available. Parents will be notified by their building principal if a change like this is made.

My student rides a bus, why isn’t the mask optional criteria available for transportation?

Students and staff are still required by Federal Order to wear a mask on public transportation, which includes extracurricular activities, field trips, etc.  This federal order supersedes local mask gating criteria.
